Hey, I'm Coach Teddy. Welcome to the certification. Before we talk about basketball, I want to talk about you.

Somebody handed you a roster and a whistle. Maybe you volunteered. Maybe nobody else raised a hand and you got drafted in the parking lot. Either way, you're here — and I want you to understand something before lesson one is over. You just took the most important coaching job in America. Not the NBA job. Yours. Because you're the first coach most of those kids will ever have, and the first coach decides whether a kid loves this game or quits it.

Let me tell you where I'm coming from. I'm Florida's all-time leading high school scorer. I played point guard at the University of Florida and we went to the national championship game in 2000. In 2026 I was inducted into the FHSAA Hall of Fame. I'm proud of all that — but none of it is why I'm qualified to teach you. I'm qualified because of what happened after. I made mistakes as a young man. Big ones, public ones. And I had to rebuild my life the same way I'm going to teach you to build a jump shot: one small correction at a time, one day at a time. In 2014 I opened the academy in Tampa, and since then I've run thousands of sessions with kids age four to eighteen.

The kids I can reach in Tampa are a drop in the bucket. The kids I can't reach — they have you. That's why it's called Coaches Coaching Coaches. I coach you. You coach them. That's how the mission scales.

So what's the mission? Three words. Help kids thrive. We say it another way on our gear: Bigger Than Basketball. Basketball is the tool, not the point. Sports are one of the last places a kid gets absolute discipline — when you step on the line you're out, when the clock hits zero one team won, no arguing with it. Inside that structure, a kid learns to make good decisions as a habit, to work, to bounce back. Players second. People first.

Here's the promise of this certification: when you finish, you'll know exactly what to run at every practice, exactly what to say, and exactly how to make kids love showing up. Confidence comes from competence — and that's true for coaches too. Nervous is normal. Nervous just means you haven't been trained yet. So let's train.

One more thing. Twenty years from now, most of your players won't remember the score of a single game. They'll remember you — what it felt like to be on your team, whether you saw them. Coach like that's true. Because it is.

Lesson 1.2 · 9 min

The 5·4·3·2·WIN Universe

You'll be able to explain the Challenge, the Shooting League, and the $5 Camp — and how a certified coach runs all three with a team.

Everything at TDBA orbits one challenge. It's called 5·4·3·2·WIN, and by the end of this lesson you'll be able to explain it to a nine-year-old in under a minute.

Here's the challenge. Sixty seconds on the clock. You make five layups. Then four free throws. Then three college threes. Then two NBA threes. Then one shot from half-court. That's fifteen makes — and they have to be consecutive. All fifteen in a row. Miss one, the run is over. Five, four, three, two, one. 5·4·3·2·WIN.

It's brutally hard. That's the point. Five divisions so everybody competes on fair ground: Adult, College, High School, Middle, and Ten and Under. Unlimited tries. Any verified run qualifies for the Mega Event — where the prizes are a car, one Bitcoin, and a million dollars, won live.

Most kids won't complete it this year. So why is it the engine? Because of the three doors your team walks through.

Door one — the Challenge. The mountain. It gives every rep in practice a reason to exist. Door two — the Shooting League: four events (100 Layups, 20 Free Throws age-adjusted, 96 Bank-Shots, 20 Threes in two minutes), every score verified and recorded, personal bests on-chain — permanent and provable. Door three — the $5 Camp: the whole encyclopedia for five dollars, your team's homework library. Out front sits the free Basketball IQ Test — the driving test for the game.

So here's your job as a certified coach: you run this ecosystem. In practice, kids chase PBs in the four events — the score sheet you learn in Module 4 feeds them directly. At home, they work the $5 Camp. All season, the whole team climbs toward 5·4·3·2·WIN, each kid in their own division, against their own best. You don't have to invent motivation or a season structure. You plug your team into something bigger than your gym.

One rule before we close: verified means verified. When you record a run or a score, you record it straight — full attempt, honest count. The whole system runs on trust. This is the Honor Code with a scoreboard attached.

The sequence: 5 LAYUPS → 4 FREE THROWS → 3 COLLEGE 3s → 2 NBA 3s → 1 HALF-COURT = 15 consecutive, 60 seconds. Three doors: Challenge · Shooting League · $5 Camp.

Lesson 1.3 · 7 min

FUN Is #1 — And Fun Is a System, Not an Accident

You'll be able to name the five fun mechanisms and explain why fun is the retention strategy, not the reward.

Ask a hundred kids why they quit a sport and the answers all rhyme: it stopped being fun. Around seventy percent of kids are out of organized sports by age thirteen, and that's the reason they give. Not the losing. Not the skill. The fun.

So at TDBA, FUN is number one. But hear the second half of the sentence, because this is where most coaches get it wrong. Fun is a system, not an accident. Most volunteer coaches think fun means being the nice coach — loose practices, lots of jokes. Then practice turns to chaos, nobody improves, and the kids get bored. Chaos isn't fun. Standing in a layup line for ten minutes isn't fun. You know what's fun? Getting better at something hard, with a clock running, in front of your friends. Kids are wired for games. So we make everything a game, on purpose, with machinery.

Here are the five machines. Write these down. One — the clock: sixty seconds turns any drill into an event. Two — the score: every drill produces a number. Three — the streak: consecutive makes create drama. Four — the ticket: recognition you can hold in your hand (you'll learn the full ticket system in Module 2). Five — the celebration: when a kid sets a PB, the gym stops and makes noise for thirty seconds. That thirty seconds is why the kid comes back Thursday.

Clock, score, streak, ticket, celebration. Notice what's inside every one: measurement. Fun and improvement aren't rivals in my gym — they're the same machine. Kids have the most fun precisely when they can feel themselves getting better. The fun IS the development, run correctly.

Here's your weekly test as a coach: watch a kid's face when their parent picks them up. That face is your report card. A kid who sprints to the car to tell mom about a new PB is a kid who's coming back next season. Retention is the whole ballgame. Fun is the retention strategy.

Lesson 1.4 · 7 min

PB Culture: Compete With Yourself, Get a Little Better Every Day

You'll be able to explain Personal Best culture and why kids compete only with yesterday's version of themselves.

Every kid on your roster is about to get a new opponent — the toughest one they'll ever face. Yesterday's version of themselves.

That's PB culture. PB stands for Personal Best, and it's the only competition that runs every single day. We don't ask kids to be the best on the team. We ask them to beat their own number. Made eleven layups in sixty seconds last week? The mission is twelve. That's the whole religion.

Three reasons we build everything on this. First: every kid can win a practice. Only one kid can be the best shooter in the gym — that competition has one winner and eleven losers every night, and the eleven quit by thirteen. But your least skilled player can set three PBs on a Tuesday while your star sets none. Second: PBs teach control what you control — a kid can't control being eight, but they can control their reps and effort, and the sheet only measures what they control. Third: small gains compound. One more make a week for a season is a different player by spring. Kids can't see compounding; the PB sheet makes it visible.

Here's your coaching language, word for word. When a kid sets a PB, say the number: "Twelve! You were at eleven!" When a kid falls short: "Still at eleven. It's not going anywhere. Thursday." No drama either direction. The number is the number.

And one warning. This culture lives or dies on you. Compare two kids to each other one time — "why can't you shoot like Marcus" — and you've told the whole gym the PB thing was fake. Never do it. Each kid against their own yesterday. Kids in a PB gym stop asking "am I good?" and start asking "am I better than I was?" You get to decide which question your gym asks. Choose the second one.

Your only opponent: yesterday's you. Every kid can win · Control what you control · Small gains compound. "Twelve! You were at eleven!" / "Still at eleven. Thursday."

Lesson 1.5 · 8 min

Listen With Your Eyes: The Honor Code and How to Install It

You'll be able to recite the four-line Honor Code and run the "listening expectations" routine at practice one.

Here's a phrase you'll say a hundred times this season, so let's learn it now. Listen with your eyes. When a coach is talking, your eyes are on the coach. Ball on your hip, body still, eyes up. I can't see your ears working — I can see your eyes. It's concrete, it's checkable, and a five-year-old can do it. That's what makes it coaching instead of nagging.

Here's how to install it — the very first thing you teach at practice one, before any basketball. Call the kids in. Say: "On this team, when a coach talks, we listen with our eyes. Show me what that looks like." Praise the first kid who nails it, by name. Then rep it — send them off to dribble, blow the whistle, watch them freeze, balls on hips, eyes find you. Make it a game: "that was three seconds, let's beat it." There's your first team PB, and it's a listening PB. When a kid keeps dribbling after the whistle — one will — don't scold. Reset. "Almost. Let's beat our time." You're teaching a skill, not catching a criminal.

Now the Honor Code — the character backbone, four lines. Make good choices. Treat people kindly. Never make the same mistake twice. Always give your absolute best.

Each line is a coaching tool. Make good choices — choices are habits, and habits are trainable like a jump shot. Treat people kindly — we cheer teammates' PBs, we never laugh at a miss. Never make the same mistake twice — hear it carefully: it is NOT "never make mistakes." Mistakes are the tuition we pay to learn. The code says the same mistake twice. When a kid fouls the same way twice, you smile and say, "Honor Code. What did we learn the first time?" The code does the correcting so you don't have to be the bad guy. Always give your absolute best — notice it doesn't say always win. Best is the one thing on the list every kid fully controls.

Install the code at practice one, right after the listening routine — say the four lines, have them repeat each one back, ninety seconds, done. Then reference it all season. And one last thing: the code applies to you. A coach who lives under his own code is the most powerful character lesson in this program. They're listening with their eyes, coach. At everything you do.

Lesson 1.6 · 7 min

Perfect Practice Makes Perfect; Confidence Comes From Competence

You'll be able to explain why reps must be correct before they're fast, and run the five-step Check It Up sequence.

Two ideas that hold all the others together. First idea: you've heard "practice makes perfect" your whole life. It's wrong. Practice makes permanent. Whatever a kid repeats gets wired in — good or bad. A thousand reps of a sideways elbow doesn't build a shooter; it builds a kid who's a thousand reps deep in a broken shot that somebody now has to un-teach, usually at thirteen, usually painfully.

So the rule is perfect practice makes perfect — and no, I don't expect eight-year-olds to be perfect. It means three moves for you. Slow is allowed — a slow correct rep beats a fast sloppy one every time. Close is allowed — we shoot from three feet with perfect form before we ever back up; form first, range second. Form scores points — a shot can miss and still score if the form was right. "It doesn't have to go in to be impressive." Wait till you see what that does to a kid who's been afraid to shoot.

Second idea: confidence comes from competence. You cannot give a kid confidence by telling them they're great — kids have flawless nonsense detectors. Praise a skill they know they don't have and you've taught them your words are decoration. Real confidence has receipts. A kid who can hit six layups in a row at the right-sized rim doesn't need a pep talk — they've done it, they know they've done it, and the knowing IS the confidence. We don't manufacture belief. We manufacture competence, scaled to the kid, one PB at a time, and belief shows up on its own with a foundation under it.

Now the tool that ties the module together — the Check It Up System, five checks. Check Mindset: be ready to compete. Check Focus: know what you want. Check Purpose: every action serves your why. Check Execution: do it with full intent. Check Reflection: how can I get better? The fifth check feeds the first — reflection today becomes mindset tomorrow. That loop IS "get a little better every day." It's not a slogan; it's this loop, running.

Use it simply. Before a drill: "Check focus — what are we chasing? Beating twelve." After: "Check reflection — what'd we learn?" Two sentences. One day you'll hear a nine-year-old say "check your focus" to a teammate, and you'll know the culture took.
